Old vs New: Evo 9 vs Golf R

I’ve been watching a lot of Mighty Car Mods the past few weeks after living under a rock, only discovering them a few months ago. This track battle caught my attention as it’s a fight between Marty’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX versus Moog’s all-wheel-drive Golf R.

The Evo IX is an icon, being the last of the Evos to be built on the CT9A platform that started with the Evo VII. It’s also the final Evo powered by the much-beloved 4G63 engine. Marty’s example runs on E85 and uses that to complement a host of tuning parts. It uses traditional mechanical limited-slip to put the power down to the road.

Moog’s Golf R is based on the most recent Volkswagen Golf, the Golf VII. Being so much newer, it’s full of newer technologies like direct injection and electronic limited-slip that works by limiting slip through electronic brake inputs to balance the car. It doesn’t require E85 to make the same power, just runs on pump gas.

Both cars are modified to produce 280kW at the wheels, about 375hp here in the states. Both are based on the time-honored sport compact car formula where manufacturers take a cheap-ish car and add power, all-wheel drive, and more aggressive suspension to transform the cars from grocery getters to cars that teenagers (and us former teenagers) drool over. And both cars are running the same tires. Funny enough, I’ve owned the cheap cars that both are based on, sort of (technically the previous gen. Golf V and CS6A Lancer ES).

I don’t want to spoil who wins, but I was surprised to see them running on a circuit. I thought this would be a repeat performance of their drag runs video, but it turns out to be more like a touge battle.
