duPont REGISTRY’s November 2014 Cars and Coffee

By  December 19, 2014

The recent November edition of the Cars & Coffee car show at duPont Registry of St Petersburg, Florida was a great mix of classic beauty and in-your-face exotics. Some regulars were recognized from my last trip to the registry back in 2011, along with a few cars that are just now beginning to trickle out of Europe and Japan.

Hennessey Viper

The factory Dodge Viper wasn’t fast enough for this owner, who went the extra mile of adding what appears to be Hennessey aero upgrades and (also possibly from Hennessey as well) a Paxton Novi 2000 supercharger.

R33 Nissan Skyline GT-R

Little did the kids attending the show know it, but amongst the S2000’s they were pining over, was something much more rare. A street-legal and plated R33 Nissan Skyline GT-R sitting on SSR wheels. Somehow, a number of these have made it onto the streets of Florida before hitting 25 years old, as I’ve seen more of them than the R32, which as of this year can be legally imported and registered, or the R34. They were likely either made legal by MotoRex or are registered as show and display vehicles.

Nearby, some American classics sat including an AMC Javelin AMX, a ’39 or ’40 Mercury coupe, ’55 Bel Air and a Factory 5 Shelby Cobra replica. Believe it or not, the replica was old enough to have antique plates.

Dodge Dart Swinger and Corvette Stingray

Inside the building, there was a small collection of classics, like the Austin Healey, Dart Swinger, Corvette Stingray, ’28 and ’29 duPont convertible coupes, the venerable Toyota FJ40, alongside some Jeepsters from the ‘50s.

On the other side of the room, flanked with toys (for tots) and driven by Santa, sat an iconic pink ’59 Cadillac Fleetwood convertible. Then, at the end was something I’d heard of but never seen in person, the pint-sized Fiat Jolly.

The stars of the show were the new Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 and an old Porsche 2.7 Carrera RSR.

It’s normal and expected that you’ll have to wait to get the shot that you want at shows like this, for that perfect moment when no one is between your lens and the car. This was especially true for these two cars. It was a whole lot of waiting, but seeing the finished photos, it seems to have been worth the wait.

On the way out, I caught some nice examples that either were parked outside or that I had just missed in the show.

BMW Alpina Z8
This Alpina BMW Z8 had evaded me at a show a couple of years back. I actually found while editing, it in the background of a photo of a Corvette. I was not going to miss it this time.

Checker Marathon taxi wagon

Last but not least, the Checker Marathon taxi wagon! I plan on returning to the duPont Registry’s Cars & Coffee soon. This time, without letting years slip by. If you’re in the area, their last show of 2014 is tomorrow morning.
