Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for, the reveal of not only the 2016 Mazda Miata but also the new ND body style and all of the technical innovations that will come from that. The main things that I think Mazda has to get right for this to continue being the greatest selling sports car of all time include the preservation of Jinba Ittai (person [and] horse [as] one body) as getting the weight down, which has increased with every subsequent generation, keep it fun and keep it simple. They’ve had a great thing going for the past quarter century with this car. It’s had to have been tricky keeping cost balanced with performance while meeting customer’s expectations, new and old. But I’m sure Mazda is up to the task.
Two days ago, a member of miata.net going by the handle “sethofdeth” posted these renderings to a new thread with nothing of a description except “2016 Mazda MX-5 by Sethofdeath.” This person had never posted to miata.net before and hasn’t since, so it could be a leak, planned or no, of the 2016 Miata, or it could a cunning opportunistic car designer looking for free exposure for his work. Either way, it looks great and it matches well with the prototypes, the proportions, and the current design aesthetic that Mazda is using. How accurate is it? We’ll soon find out.
Watch the live reveal tonight (or today if you’re on the West Coast) at 9pm EST/6pm PST. Until then, we can all drool over this cloth-covered image courtesy of a special Facebook page that Mazda created for the event.
